Verifiable Carbon Provenance for the EU Digital Product Passport & CBAM

A New Layer of Trust for a Regulated World

As global regulations tighten, manufacturers are being asked a question that is increasingly difficult to answer: Where, exactly, did this carbon come from — and can you prove it? Frameworks such as the EU Digital Product Passport (DPP), the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), and Scope 3 reporting are shifting the burden from declaration to verification. It is no longer enough to state a product's carbon footprint; companies must be able to substantiate it.

The world has already built reliable highways for sustainability data — blockchains, digital passports, audited ledgers. But a highway only moves what is placed on it; it does not check whether the cargo is genuine. Today, most carbon data still enters these systems as self-declaration. REVCELL works at the on-ramp — a roadworthiness check for data — where a physical event, not a claim, establishes where and when carbon was captured. We do not compete with these frameworks; we give them something true to carry.

REVCELL's Origin Proof Technology is a provenance technology designed to meet exactly this need. It verifies the exact origin of carbon — from a recorded point of capture to the finished product — and secures that record, making it extremely difficult to tamper with. We are also developing the ability to certify a guaranteed minimum quantity fixed in a product (in development). Rather than a footprint estimated after the fact, it provides a verifiable chain of evidence, established at the source.

Built on REVCELL's granted patents (No. 7189644 and No. 7647729, with further patents pending), this is the same verification technology that authenticates the atmospheric CO₂ sealed within our ChronAir™ artworks. Today, the system records and certifies the point of capture; we are now extending it into a full provenance infrastructure for industry.

The AR traceability feature is under development and is the subject of a pending patent application.

Step 1 — Capture: From RECOLIME® to ReCaBO™

It begins with RECOLIME®, our specialized material that captures carbon dioxide directly from the air. The moment it is exposed to the atmosphere, RECOLIME® begins to fix the CO₂ within it.

Once it has captured carbon, RECOLIME® becomes ReCaBO™ — a recycled carbon material that carries a verified record of where and when its CO₂ was taken from the air. This is not an estimate or an offset purchased elsewhere; it is atmospheric carbon, fixed into a tangible material, with its origin established at the moment of capture.

In this way, the carbon footprint is not calculated backward from a finished product. It is recorded forward, from the very first step.

Step 2 — Proof: A record built to resist tampering

The challenge was simple but fundamental. Because RECOLIME® reacts with CO₂ the moment it meets the air, capture can begin before the material ever reaches the user — making it impossible to know whose carbon, captured where and when, is actually recorded.

REVCELL's answer was to tie the record to a physical, irreversible act. The material is held in a sealed package, and its identifying code is placed where it can only be read after the package is opened. Opening the package is what exposes the material to the air and begins capture — so the very act of starting capture is also the act that registers it. At that moment, scanned by a smartphone, the time and location of capture are recorded as the origin of that material.

Because the code cannot be read while sealed, a capture event cannot be claimed before it has truly begun. "Unopened" means "not yet started" — a fact guaranteed not by software, but by physical structure. This is the foundation of REVCELL's Origin Proof Technology, protected by granted patents No. 7189644 and No. 7647729 (filed in the US and EU).

Step 3 — Activate: From certified carbon to real products Certified carbon can enter real products in three different ways, each offering a different kind of proof.

As fixed carbon in art.
In our ChronAir™ artworks, provenance-certified atmospheric CO₂ is sealed within the glass. The exact amount varies with each handmade piece, so these works are certified for the authenticity and origin of the carbon they hold — a verified moment of the atmosphere, kept in permanent physical form.

As a circular raw material.
ReCaBO™ can replace mined limestone as a manufacturing feedstock. At Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai, it was used as part of the glass in original beer tumblers, and it lives in our handcrafted work with Sghr (Sugahara Glass). In glassmaking, the CO₂ is released again during high-temperature melting — so this is not storage. But it is not ordinary recycling either.

Conventional glass releases carbon that was locked in mined limestone ages ago, adding it to today's atmosphere. With ReCaBO™, the carbon comes from today's air — captured, with its origin verified, from a specific place such as a rose garden or a distillery — and returns to that same atmosphere. Nothing new is dug from the earth. It is a closed loop of certified atmospheric carbon: the air of a specific place, circulating through the product it helped create.

As fixed carbon with a certified quantity.
This is where provenance meets measurable proof. In materials such as resins, coatings, and concrete — which are not melted — the carbon stays fixed within the product. For these, we are developing the ability to certify not only the origin of the carbon, but a guaranteed minimum quantity fixed in each product — exactly the kind of data that frameworks like EU-DPP and CBAM require. (In development.)

Each path carries its own mark. Each way of entering a product is certified by its own mark — Powered by REVCELL for materials, Traced by REVCELL for finished products, and ChronAir™ for art and luxury pieces.

Not the factory. Not the road, either.

REVCELL doesn't build factories — it licenses its technology to partners who already make and sell products. And it doesn't build the platforms that move environmental value, either. It's the idea of a neutral verification layer — a way to give any data driving onto any platform its own "inspection." We don't compete with existing frameworks or registries; we aim to complement them, backing the trustworthiness of what enters at the source. By verifying — rather than building — we help industries adopt certified carbon without new infrastructure, avoiding the startup "valley of death."

ChronAir™ — Fixed Carbon as Art Provenance-certified atmospheric CO₂, sealed within handcrafted glass. Each piece holds a verified moment of the air — a certificate of origin made tangible.

Proven at Expo 2025 — Circular Glass At Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai, atmospheric CO₂ captured by REVCELL was used as part of the glass in Suntory's original beer tumblers, crafted by Toyo-Sasaki Glass. Not stored, but circulated: the carbon of today's air, made into a premium product instead of newly mined stone.

The Next Frontier — Fixed & Quantified Beyond glass, we are developing applications in resins, coatings, and concrete — materials that keep carbon fixed and allow a guaranteed minimum quantity to be certified in each product, exactly what frameworks like EU-DPP and CBAM require. (In development.)

Why provenance has value.
The market already prices origin. Independent reports describe atmospheric (DAC-derived) CO₂ commanding a substantial premium over industrially sourced CO₂, and CO₂-fixed building materials selling above their conventional equivalents. When origin can be proven, it can be priced — which is exactly what verifiable provenance makes possible.

Built for the Regulations That Matter
At the heart of REVCELL's Origin Proof Technology is a foundation of granted patents for recording an origin that is extremely difficult to tamper with — with further methods now patent-pending as we extend it. This is precisely what a new generation of global regulations is beginning to demand:

  • EU Digital Product Passport (DPP) — verifiable product-level origin and material data
  • CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism) — traceable carbon origin for cross-border goods
  • Scope 3 reporting — substantiated upstream and supply-chain data
  • Battery Passport — origin and material traceability for EV batteries
  • ...and other emerging provenance and disclosure frameworks

As these frameworks evolve, we are continually extending our technology to meet them — and we welcome partners who share that goal.

New Target Areas

The same provenance approach can extend well beyond carbon. The challenge is always the same: once a material is made, moved, or mixed, its true origin becomes hard to prove. We are seeking partners to solve this together in fields such as:

  • Hydrogen — Green hydrogen looks identical to any other once it's in the tank. Our approach can keep its renewable origin provable, from production through transport.
  • SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) — Proving a fuel is truly sustainable means tracing it across a long supply chain. We can help carry that proof from feedstock to fuel.
  • Green Steel & EV Batteries — Meeting EU-CBAM and Battery Passport rules means showing where the materials really came from.
  • Semiconductors & Polymers — Bringing visible proof of origin to long, complex chemical supply chains.
